Lose the Weight and not Yourself
Written by Diana Koch.
Coincidentally, I was invited to two different celebrations over the weekend. Both parties were attended exclusively by women and I had the pleasure of making a few discoveries. The attention that my post-pregnancy weight loss was receiving was both flattering and daunting. Women are extremely receptive to
weight losers and are eager to learn the magic formula that will produce the greatly desired results.
I find it flattering that others are showing interest in becoming healthier but not many understand how to get there. The only advice that I can offer to someone is to lead an entire lifestyle based around healthy eating and exercise, not just a quick fix. Some are a little dumbfounded by this answer.
There have been times when I have been uncomfortable by some people's attention to my post-baby body. I am unsure if they do this on purpose but I feel as though they are completely absorbed by just the weight loss itself. They do not give thought to what it truly takes to achieve healthiness. One particular lady that I had met was very interested in what size my jeans were. For some people, their self-worth is estimated by the number on the clothing that they wear.
The concept of loving yourself is the key to successful weight loss and not the other way around. If you do not take care of your well-being then being a size zero will not help you in any way, shape or form. In order to experience physical change you must first begin within yourself. This will involve changing the way you perceive things and the choices you make on a minute to minute basis.
I recall another woman who had expressed interest in my weight loss and wanted to know what I was doing. I couldn't help but notice that the entire night she was constantly eating. It seemed as though she didn't know when to stop. Her hands were always full with food and she was just munching away. Now we all know that this type of behaviour is contradictory to losing weight. The reason that she is constantly consumed by food is a matter that requires more than just a diet. It involves re-training your brain and getting in touch with your emotions while making well-informed decisions. Not exactly a topic that can be covered in a ten minute conversation.
The truth is that we have the power to make the best decisions possible towards improving ourselves. You are the only one who has complete control over what goes into your body yet many are looking for a cure. My observations have led me to believe that many of us are completely mislead by what it takes to lead an entire lifetime of weight management. All the fad diets in the world will not help you unless you are willing to adopt a more conscious way of living.
Each and every one of us is faced with food on a daily basis and our relationship with it is very important. As backwards as this may sound losing weight should not be on the forefront of your mind when trying to lose weight. Instead, the focus should be placed on finding the most comfortable approach that works for you. You must also be flexible in allowing the course of change to lead you to new methods.
What may work for a limited period of time may not be the one and only tactic available to your goals. You must find as many ways as possible in order to be able to make your dreams a reality. You need goals and there is more than one way to accomplish them. All it takes is a little perseverance and the commitment to continuous betterment in everything you do.
It all begins now.
