Can you Change your Luck?
Written by: Laura Morris.
You often see promises of instant wealth associated with the practice of Feng Shui. Many of us think of this ancient art as superstitious and filled with get-rich-quick tips. I have to admit that before I delved deeper into the practice I thought Feng Shui was all about increasing cold hard cash for businesses. But I have learned through study and practise that the fortune one reaps from Feng Shui is prosperity and blessings. These things come in many forms.
Having said that, many people still want to know how they can change their fortunes so they can be more financially prosperous. Just recently it was reported that a man in Australia won over $1 million in a home lottery after he glued a gold coin to his front step. Headlines read "Feng Shui triggers jackpot win." He had actually won two prior lotteries over the course of a year and after placing the coin.
Was it Feng Shui at work? Well, yes and no. While not a traditional Feng Shui cure, the gluing of the gold coin was his symbolic way of inviting in more wealth but it was only a small part in a series of predetermined occurrences and self-made opportunities. Many unknown factors could have contributed to his win. Simply put, it was a perfect storm of destiny, timing and opportunity that resulted in his fortune.
I think of one's luck or fortune as being broken down into three groups: Destiny, Karma and Motivation. An individual can impact two of these areas (karma and motivation) but one's destiny is predetermined by the cosmos. The positive amount of each of these a person has will determine how much good fortune he or she will reap throughout his or her life.
- Destiny: This is the luck you were born with. Your birth date and birth order, where you were born, who your parents are: these are all factors that were determined by fate and were beyond your control. Unfortunately, or maybe fortunately, you cannot do anything to change this luck but you can make changes to the other two elements of fortune.
- Karma: What kind of person do you want to be? This luck is influenced by the actions you take to improve your situation and position on earth. By doing charitable works and selfless deeds you can create a more positive existence. Feng Shui is placed in this group because you are improving your surroundings and quality of life. However, Feng Shui can be successful if you have taken the other elements mentioned into account.
- Motivation: This is the luck you make by working hard, educating yourself and being motivated to make changes and be a better person. Motivation should be in place before undertaking Feng Shui to improve your physical space. This is where you take stock of your life and decide to make a change. Am I in the right job? Am I surrounded by the right people? Often this is challenging and unpleasant but, as they say, if it were easy everyone would do it.
There is no substitute for hard work.

So can people change their fortunes? Yes - by focusing on the things they can control. Perhaps you can't change your birth destiny, but by working on improving your quality of life and by pushing yourself to become a better person, you can alter the path of your life. Opportunities and challenges will present themselves along your journey; how you use those opportunities and tackle those challenges will determine your fortune.
Many blessings and Namaste.
