Sacral Chakra - Swadhisthaana

The second chakra is located beneath the navel, and is related to the sexual and reproductive systems. It governs sexuality, emotions, creativity, anger, fear instinct and perceptions concerning food or sex. The word "sacral" comes from the same root as the word "sacred". It is sexual awareness that characterizes this chakra and not your primal sex drive. Sex is not meant to be meaningless, but should bring pleasure and joy between two lovers.

The sacral chakra is located in the lower abdominal area of your body, between the navel and genital area. It relates to water, including all the bodily fluids and the reproductive organs, blood, saliva, seminal fluids and lymph. Water therapies are the best ways to balance this chakra, since our bodies are made up of about 80% water.

If your sacral chakra is balanced, then you tend to have great physical grace, be friendly, trusting and open to express your thoughts and feelings to others. Your focus is more on the positive rather than the negative.

A non balanced sacral chakra brings out feelings of guilt, envy, self pity and manipulative behaviour. It can also affect your sexuality by increasing obsessiveness, jealousy and never being able to be happy with your sexuality. You would use sex for purely physical purposes, without any emotions and disregard the feelings of your partner. In the extreme, if your chakra is closed, you can become impotent or frigid.

If you are balanced, then you have the ability to have strong bonds with your partner and take great pleasure in your emotional and sexual happiness.

Ways to balance the Sacral Chakra

Practicing Warrior poses, Virabhadrasana is Sanskirt, can help stimulate and balance the sacral chakra. Warrior poses are known as strong postures that work your pelvis, hips and lower back and increase circulation of blood and lymph throughout the body. Keeping well hydrated by drinking lots of water will improve the health of your sacral chakra and your general health. Your whole body depends on water to function properly.
