I received the book - Core of the Yoga Sutras, by B.K.S. Iyengar, who is well known for bringing yoga to the West. His teachings provide deep and philosophical explanations and commentaries that promote the practice of yoga to heal the mind, body and spirit.
The book is free from from any religious bias, and has a universal appeal for serious yoga enthusiasts. It is Patanjali reinvented. Patanjali is a guru who originally wrote the yoga sutras about 1,700 years ago. His birth story was a bit mythical, as he supposedly fell from heaven as a snake in his re-incarnation. His teachings became very recognized by many ancient sages, that his text became the authority on the subject of the discipline of yoga.
In the Core Of the Yoga Sutras, Dr. Iyengar goes on to explain 35 facets of mind, which demonstrate its capabilities to function in different roles. Starting from the biological mind, moving to the temporal mind and finally reaching the stage of bliss, which is the yogic or divine mind.
He also explains the question of why we long to connect with something larger than ourselves, and why consciousness inevitably involves us searching for a spiritual quest. I must say that the book seems to have an answer to most questions and concerns about the 8 Limbs of Yoga.
Iyengar has devoted his life to the practice and study of yoga. It was Iyengar's unique teaching style, bringing precision and clarity to the practice, as well as a mindset ofYoga for all, that has made it into a worldwide phenomenon. Iyengar, who turned 94 in December last year, and calls this hislast major work in this lifetime.
In Core of the Yoga Sutras, he applies the philosophical core of yoga-the Yoga Sutras of Patanjali. These are 196 aphorisms forming the foundational text of yoga philosophy. Each sutra is presented as Sanskrit text, transliteration and English translation, followed by Iyengar's unique commentary and authority only he can bring to the work.
This is a wonderful introduction to the spiritual philosophy that is the foundation of yoga practice, and we are excited to share this wonderful new title with you.
